COVID-19 pandemic in Portugal update
After three states of emergency because of the pandemic, which forced the closure of most people and economic activities during more than 45 days, Portugal begin to reopen. The government approved a plan to reopen after the peak of the pandemic, in three distinct phases (May 4th and 18th and June 1st, depending on the evolution of the public health.
May 4 was the first phase of the country’s reopening. No longer has a state of emergency but Portugal had to move on to the state of calamity, meaning that the duty of confinement continued. Some shops reopened, mostly important the surf is allowed with some restrictions, but only on May 18 will there be a wider opening.
Finally, and if the evolution of public health allows it – that is, if the number of new infections does not rise in such a way as to jeopardize the sustainability of the NHS – on June 1 the country may reach a level of activity closer to that known before the arrival of the virus in Portugal.
COVID-19 Portugal numbers on May 17, 2020 over a total population of 10,259,214:
Total Cases 29,036 | Recovered 4,636 | Deaths 1,218 | Active 23,182
Fortunately and mostly because of the quickness response by the Portuguese government and local authorities to contain the virus and the way as the people accepted the lockdown measures, the numbers have been decreasing every day. On the last 24 hours we had only 226 new cases and more 15 deaths, numbers lower than the first days of March which is very positive.
