Discover Sintra: The enchanted village

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, Sintra is more than a destination, it’s an experience where history, nature, gastronomy, and adventure blend seamlessly.

Sintra municipality is the second more populated in Portugal, only less than Lisbon, with close to 400 thousand inhabitants.

Sintra is a place where every corner tells a story, every view feels magical, and every flavor leaves a memory. Whether you’re wandering through palaces, sipping rare wines, riding Atlantic waves, or savoring time-honored sweets, Sintra truly lives up to its name as an enchanted village.

Perched high above the village, Park and Pena Palace is Sintra’s most iconic landmark. Its vivid yellows and reds, eclectic architectural styles, and dramatic setting make it feel almost unreal. Built in the 19th century as a Romantic retreat for Portuguese royalty, the palace offers sweeping views over the Sintra mountains and, on clear days, all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. Wandering through its terraces and ornate rooms is like stepping into a royal dream.

Right in the heart of town stands the Sintra National Palace, instantly recognizable by its twin conical chimneys. This palace is the oldest royal residence in Portugal, continuously inhabited for centuries. Inside, beautifully preserved rooms showcase stunning azulejo tiles and tell stories of kings, queens, and court life. Its central location makes it a perfect starting point for exploring the village.

For a journey even further back in time, climb the walls of the Moorish Castle. Built by the Moors in the 8th and 9th centuries, the fortress snakes dramatically along the mountain ridges. Walking its stone paths offers not only a glimpse into medieval defense strategies but also some of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the region.

Few places in Sintra spark the imagination like Quinta da Regaleira. Just a short drive from Sintra, Azenhas do Mar is one of the most picturesque coastal villages in Portugal. Cascading down dramatic cliffs toward the Atlantic Ocean, its whitewashed houses create a postcard-perfect scene. At the bottom lies a natural ocean pool carved into the rocks, where visitors can swim while waves crash just beyond.

Azenhas do Mar developed as a coastal settlement within the Colares wine region, with its early economy based on grain milling, viticulture and fishing. The village takes its name from the watermills (azenhas) that once operated along the Cameijo Creek to grind wheat. The oldest of these may date back to the Islamic period and their remnants are still visible among the village’s houses and gardens. Azenhas do Mar is now a beloved stop for its breathtaking sunsets, seaside restaurants, and tranquil atmosphere. It’s the perfect complement to Sintra’s mountains, where fairytale forests meet the endless sea.

Beyond palaces and castles, Sintra also delights the senses. The nearby Colares DOC region is famous for its unique wines grown in sandy soils close to the ocean. There are documents proving the existence of vineyards in this region in the 12th century. Demarcated Region since 1908, second in the country to achieve this standard. These vines, often protected by deep trenches and coastal winds, produce distinctive wines unlike any other in Portugal. A tasting of Colares wines is a chance to savor the terroir and centuries-old winemaking traditions.

Just a short drive from Sintra lies Praia Grande, a wild Atlantic beach renowned for its powerful waves. A favorite spot for surfers, it offers excellent conditions year-round. Even if you don’t surf, the dramatic coastline, crashing waves, and fresh sea air make Praia Grande a perfect place to unwind and connect with nature.

 

Savoring Sintra’s Sweet Traditions

No visit to Sintra is complete without indulging in its traditional sweets. Local pastries like Travesseiros, flaky pillows filled with almond cream, and Queijadas de Sintra, small cheesecakes with centuries of history, are essential tastings. Paired with a coffee in a local café, they offer a delicious conclusion to a day of exploration.

Staying overnight in one of the many hotels it’s a unique experience as the village changes from day to night, where in the day is visited by thousands but at night, after everyone got back to Lisbon, stays very calm.
